Eureka Springs artist and photographer John Rankine is once again pictorially documenting the citizens of Eureka Springs. Rankine’s latest project, A Community At Peace, will feature 500 black and white individual portraits to be unveiled November 17 at The Space, 2 Pine Street.

The subjects have been photographed in a studio setting using dramatic lighting as each individual contemplates “peace.” The show will be a multi-media installation with images projected on large screens, slide show presentations on computer monitors, and selected framed prints on display.

John is no stranger to documenting Eureka Springs residents. He was staff photographer for the Lovely Citizen newspaper for seven years. In 2004 he exhibited a series of seventy-five local artists’ portraits in a show that received rave reviews. Besides his portraiture work, Rankine is known for photographs of well-designed still lifes using provocative subject matter that often includes doll heads, bones, tortoise shells, and other found objects.

Rankine was awarded Best of Show honors at the 2007 Eureka Springs Fall Art Show. He is represented by the Silver Queen Gallery in Park City, Utah, and his work will be featured at the Pentimento Gallery in Toronto, Canada, in May 2009.

A Community At Peace: Opening reception is Monday, November 17 (World Peace Day), 5 p.m. The show will be on display 5 p.m., Thursday, November 20, and 5 p.m., Friday, November 21. A closing reception is scheduled Saturday, November 22, at 5 p.m.
Location: The Space, 2 Pine Street, Eureka Springs, AR.
