The Grandmothers sat on the ground before me, and as I stepped into their circle, spherical waves began to spin around, drawing me into closer union with them. I heard someone singing, “Where I stand is holy, holy is the ground,” and then the Grandmothers spoke. “Anchor yourself,” they said, “this circle will anchor you.” “Yes, Grandmothers,” I replied and felt the gyrations of the spin drawing me further in. I saw a wine opener–turning and turning, as it screwed itself into the earth, and as I watched, it was I who was becoming deeply fastened to the Mother.

…The soul, as I understand this word, is most definitely rooted in some larger, unfathomable Mystery – what many people call God or Spirit – but it is also unique to each of us, and experienced most immediately in the outworking of everyday life. Tracking the soul then is a matter of observing everyday life within a larger framework of meaning and intuition connecting the individual to the cosmos, such as is offered by astrology. My use of astrology to track the soul does not depend upon speculating about the meaning of abstract symbolism. . .

…And so it was, when I began to read David Zimmermann’s newly released Dissipated Assets. A relatively short read of less than 120 poems (mostly one page and often one sentence), the book sucked me into the heart of Mr. Zimmerman’s honest and vulnerable expressions. Dissipated Assets is about love and death, forgiveness and trust. Though it may touch on topics of war, environmental destruction, and disease as the stories unfold, there is always the thread of an elegant grace of being and regard for the human experience…
